Flowers Steal The Show

Just finished today another flower I have been wanting to paint and include a few birds 

that didn't quite steal the show of these beautiful Flame Lilies. They grow everywhere

here on the west coast and come in different colors. These are my favorite with the mingling colors 

of red, deep orange and yellows. I purchased a new palette of colors and have been enjoying them. The only problems I really ran into was simplifying my original photo I took of the flower. That has

been my only struggle with  painting plants in their environment. 

Whale Festival In Mendocino, California

I had a chance to paint a few whales Friday for the whale festival here in Mendocino. Each one
is 24 x 30 on Aches 140 lb. watercolor paper. We hung it up in the front window of Racine's art store in Fort Bragg. I was planning on using the inktense but learned that they are not colorfast. Can you guess which whale is heading north now?

I am really happy with my finished painting! The background makes everything pop and the two different shades of blue give it even more depth. In person the shades blend much better than it shows in the photo. Now on to my new project that I will hopefully have a start on before next week. 

Under-painting Done For New Painting

I'm now getting back into the studio and creating a series of birds of northern California. My goal is to paint loser and make each mark count. I've been enjoying Painting my World by Karen Margulis blog on The Evolution of Style...What is the Key? Although I don't use pastel's, I love her work and her inspiration. Here is my start with my first bird painting in my series.

I tend to paint tight and I want this one to be a little loser and just enjoy the process. We'll see how this goes.

Family Emergency And Getting Back To My Turtle

I can't believe I've been gone so long from painting and blogging. I had a family emergency that took me to Michigan for almost a month then trying to get back to a routine again has for the most part been difficult.

I started on my turtle earlier in September and here is where I'm at now. The turtle seems to sit on top of the painting and not in it, so I'm going to paint a glaze on it which will have the turtle be part of the environment it's in. I will finish it tomorrow and post the final results.

I tend to go choose the most difficult paintings to create. 

 I love tide pools! I have great memories with my girls at the beach in

the NW and now here in California finding them. This painting was inspired by

the tide pools of Mendocino, California. Although it did start out

vastly different, I ended up using more imagination than my photo 

by the end. I was getting too detailed in all the colors and things

going on in the photo, so I finally took away the photo and just

painted. I included beach sand from this coast into the painting, which is a lot 

of fun. This is for sale at my online gallery.
